Jake Gyllenhaal is set to play famously hard-living and prognosticating quarterback Joe Namath in a Universal biopic.

Don’t get too excited about seeing the interception-prone Jets quarterback’s life on the big screen any time soon, though. According to Variety, a creative team is largely in place for the film, but nothing can move forward until after the writers strike ends.

The trade says that David Hollander will write the film for producer Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance and executive producer Jimmy Walsh of Namanco. Namath has reportedly signed off on the movie and on Gyllenhaal’s casting.

Although he threw more interceptions than touchdown passes for his career, Namath was revered in the Big Apple as “Broadway Joe” for his love of the New York City nightlife. A five-time Pro Bowler and an NFL Hall-of-Famer, Namath made his biggest mark when he promised his Jets would beat the highly favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. He came through on his guarantee, leading his team to one of the bigger upsets in football history.

An Oscar nominee for “Brokeback Mountain,” Gyllenhaal was most recently seen in “Rendition” and “Zodiac.” He’s currently shooting “Brothers” opposite Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman. He’s also been attached to an untitled moon film from Doug Liman and to “Nailed” from David O. Russell.
