The unlikely pairing of Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo in 2007’s Zodiac proved to be another notch on the wall of success for director David Fincher. Many consider Zodiac his best film since Fight Club, if not better. The film is also no stranger to scores of “best of 2007′ lists, including best picture. On January 8, 2008, Paramount Home Entertainment is finally releasing the director’s cut of Zodiac on HD DVD, after the studio initially appeared ready to release it alongside the standard DVD last summer. The delay worked out for the best as it brings two discs chock full of special features exploring the film and the real-life Zodiac killer it’s based on.

Jake celebrated his 27th birthday Wednesday on the set of his new film Brothers, which is filming in New Mexico.

Jake was seen with a faux tattoo on his neck for his role in the Jim Sheridan-directed film, out 2009. Brothers also stars Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman which tells the story of a young man who comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to play famously hard-living and prognosticating quarterback Joe Namath in a Universal biopic.

Don’t get too excited about seeing the interception-prone Jets quarterback’s life on the big screen any time soon, though. According to Variety, a creative team is largely in place for the film, but nothing can move forward until after the writers strike ends.

The trade says that David Hollander will write the film for producer Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance and executive producer Jimmy Walsh of Namanco. Namath has reportedly signed off on the movie and on Gyllenhaal’s casting.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel are attached to star in “Nailed,” a risque political satire co-written by a daughter of Al Gore.

David O. Russell (”Three Kings”) is attached to direct from a screenplay co-written with Kristin Gore, a published novelist and former writer on “Futurama.”

Biel would play Sammy Joyce, a socially awkward small-town receptionist who has a nail accidentally shot into her head by a clumsy workman, eliciting wild sexual urges.

The uninsured Joyce goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the bizarrely injured. She meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal) who takes advantage of her sex drive and capitalizes on her crusade as Joyce heads into her own career in politics.

Principal photography is set to start in January.

Neither star has a signed contract for the film. Their commitment could depend on juggling other features.

Russell is no stranger to politics. He started as an 1980s political activist before directing the prescient Gulf War drama “Three Kings.”
